Etymology: Tylochromis: Greek, tylos = callus + Greek, chromis = a fish, perhaps a perch (Ref. 45335); intermedius: Named by Boulenger (1916) presumably in reference to its scale formula which he stated to be intermediate between that of T. jentinki and T. lateralis (Ref. 52346).

Épines dorsales (Total): 12 - 15; Rayons mous dorsaux (Total): 15-18; Épines anales 3; Rayons mous anaux: 7 - 9; Vertèbres: 31. Diagnosis: 31 vertebrae (Ref. 52346). 3 scale rows between anterior parts of upper and lower lateral line; thin lips and a lower jaw with posterior end lower than tip (forming an angle of 15-20° with the horizontal)(Ref. 7378, 52346, 53405).
Opportunistic benthic macrophage (Ref. 52346). Prefers insects and their larvae; maternal mouthbrooder that does not pair-bond (Ref. 52307).
