Western Indian Ocean: known only from Natal (South Africa), Zanzibar (Tanzania), Madagascar, and Mauritius, but probably more widespread.

Found around deep rocky reefs up to a depth of at least 30 m (Ref. 9710). Solitary or in small groups (Ref. 9710). Also caught with nets and other kinds of artisanal gear. Mainly sold fresh.
