Etymology: Lecanogaster: Greek,lekane = dish + Greek, gaster = stomach (Ref. 45335);  gorgoniphila: Name stems from the word gorgonia (gorgonian) and the Greek φϊλη (f meaning friend, referring to the close association with gorgonians; noun in apposition (Ref. 116776).

Short description Morphology | Morphometrics

Dorsal soft rays (total): 4-5; Anal soft rays: 3 - 4; Vertebrae: 28. This species is distinguished by the following characters: D 4-5; A 3-4; pectoral-fin rays 21-23, principal caudal-fin rays 11-14; rakers on third gill arch 12-14, very small, partially fused; a papillae in centre of pelvic disk forming a round patch; pelvic disc region B with 5-6 rows of papillae; head relatively short (2.4-3.4 in SL), and relatively narrow (width 4.5-7.4 in SL); head and body colour variable in life, usually dorsally reddish white, ventrally rose, with 8 bright red bars with scattered white spots (Ref. 116776).
