Etymology: Seleniolycus: Greek, selene = moon + Greek, lykos = wolf (Ref. 45335);  pectoralis: Name refers to the unique character in the genus, pectoral fin with ventral rays thickened and exserted (Ref. 58765).

Dorsale zachte stralen (totaal) : 76 - 80; Anale zachte stralen: 64 - 66; Wervels: 86 - 89. This species is distinguished by the following characters: exserted ventralmost pectoral fin rays, scales present on posterior 2/5 of body; D 76-80; A 64-66; suborbital head pores 6-7, preoperculomandibular pores 8; lengths of predorsal 28.0-30.7% SL, snout 28.3-36.6% HL, eye diameter 9.4-12.0% HL; pectoral fin rays 14-16; anterior dorsal fin pterygiophore associated with 6-7 vertebra; vertebrae 23-27 + 61-63 = 86-89. Colour of body and head when preserved light to medium brown, darker dorsal and anal fin margins, pectoral fin and nasal tubes; peritoneum dark brown, orobranchial chamber and gill rakers pale (Ref. 58765).
