Etymology: Boulengerella: From George Albert Boulenger (1858-1937); he revised the works of Günther about Percoidei (Ref. 45335).
More on author: Boulenger.
Environment: milieu / climate zone / depth range / distribution range
Écologie
; eau douce pélagique; pH range: 5.2 - 6.8; dH range: ? - 10. Tropical; 23°C - 27°C (Ref. 2060)
South America: Rio Negro, Amazonas, Brazil and southern portions of the upper Río Orinoco in Venezuela.
Taille / Poids / Âge
Maturity: Lm ?  range ? - ? cm
Max length : 25.8 cm SL mâle / non sexé; (Ref. 38209); poids max. publié: 74.70 g (Ref. 125977)
Épines dorsales (Total): 0; Rayons mous dorsaux (Total): 10-11; Épines anales 0; Rayons mous anaux: 9 - 11; Vertèbres: 48 - 49. The location of the dorsal-fin base largely posterior of the vertical through the anal fin origin distinguishes this species from all congeners except B. maculata, from which it differs in possessing a narrow, dark, horizontal stripe extending from the rear of the orbit of the caudal peduncle, the presence of distinct, dark cross-bars on the lobes of the caudal fin, and absence of dark spots about the size of the pupil on the body.
