Etymology: Knipowitschia: Because of N.M.Knipowitsch, a zoologist and Russian ichthyologist from the Academy of Sciences. Expeditions in "Pomor" and "Pervosvanniy" ships to Azov and Black sea (1898-1908).

الأشواك الظهرية (المجموع): 6 - 8; الأشعة الظهرية الناعمة (المجموع): 7-9; شوكة شرجية 1; أشعه شرجية لينه: 7 - 9; فقرات: 30 - 32. Anterior oculoscapular and preopercular head canals present; scales mostly restricted to axillary patch, but with scattered scales along lateral midline of caudal peduncle. Males with numerous thin vertical striae on flank.
The original habitat was described as a spring. A short-lived species which is threatened due to pollution, habitat destruction and water abstraction (Ref. 26100).
