Etymology: Ituglanis: Greek, itys, ityos = circle + Greek, glanis = a fish that can eat the bait without touching the hook; a cat fish (Ref. 45335); jaguarete: Name 'jaguarete' from Indigenous noun from the language Tupi-Guarani of 'jaguar', in reference to the similarity of their body coloration. A noun in apposition.

The species inhabits a narrow, shallow stream approximately 4.0 m wide, with depths varying from a few centimeters to 0.5 m. The stream has moderate flow, a substrate of gravel and rocks, and is bordered by well-preserved riparian vegetation characteristic of Deciduous Seasonal Forest physiognomy (Ref. 138403).
