Etymology: Luciogobius: Latin, lucius = pike + Latin, gobius = gudgeon (Ref. 45335)huatungensis: Named for its type localities found in both Hualien and Taitung, counties in eastern Taiwan; with the abbreviation 'Huatung' commonly used in Mandarin to refer to these two counties collectively.

Spine dorsali (totale) : 1; Raggi dorsali molli (totale) : 14 - 15; Spine anali: 1; Raggi anali molli: 15; Vertebre: 39. This species is distinguished from its congeners by the following set of characters: D2 I,15, A I,15, pectoral fin rays modally 14 with 4 upper, free soft rays and 1 lower free ray; vertebrae 17 + 22 = 39. Colouration: body brown with minute creamy yellow round spots; head and body has small brown spots; belly is creamy yellow with fewer brown spots; second dorsal fin with tiny white marks; pectoral fin has several round melanophores, most membrane with brown marks (Ref. 133051).
