Etymology: Osteochilichthys:Greek, osteon = bone + Greek, cheilos = lip + Greek, ichthys = fish (Ref. 45335); elegans:Name from Latin ‘elegans’ meaning 'elegant', referring to the graceful form and colour of this species.

This species is distinguished by the following characters: 43- 44 lateral line scales 43-44l pre - dorsal scales 13-14. Colouration: upper lateral dusky green; lower lateral light yellow; blackish proximal part and the dorsal fin reddish at the distal border; ventral and anal fins are reddish; differs from its congeners in not having any mid lateral color band, anal fin with spots or bands (Ref. 132417). Cross section: oval.
