Danionidae (Danios) > Danioninae
Etymology: Danionella: Vernacular name fron India and Sri Lanka; diminutive; cerebrum: Name from Latin 'cerebrum' for brain, referring to the fact that this species has one of the smallest adult brains among vertebrates and has become a promising new model for neurophysiological studies; noun in apposition.

Descripción breve
Claves de identificación | Morfología | Morfometría
Radios blandos dorsales (total) : 8 - 9; Radios blandos anales: 15 - 18; Vértebra: 33 - 35. This species is distinguished by the following characters:A 15-18; pectoral-fn rays 6; vertebrae 33-35; presence of a ventromedially directed cartilage flange from the taenia marginalis anterior that approaches the trabecula communis; presence in the male of bony flanges on the outer arm of the os suspensorium and a connection of these to the
lateral process of vertebra 2;, presence of a maxillo-mandibular cartilage; absence of odontoid processes in the male; anal-fn pterygiophores 14-17; principal caudal fn rays 9 + 9; pelvic-fin rays 5; differs from D. translucida by the last dorsal-fn ray inserted opposite to the last anal-fn ray (vs. last dorsal-fn ray inserted posterior to last anal-fn ray), by the last anal-fn pterygiophore inserted in front of haemal spine of vertebra 22–24 (vs. 19–21), by the lateral process of the second vertebra blade-like (vs. axe shaped), and by the distal tip of the fused inner arms of the ossa suspensoria bifurcated (vs. single) and not reaching the middle of the anterior swimbladder (vs. curving around and reaching middle of anterior swimbladder (Ref. 131371).
Cross section: oval.
This species was found in turbid low altitude streams with visible flow, surface temperatures of around 30 °C, pH 7.4-7.5 and soft water of 20-100 micro Siemens. It was not found at the surface, but at a depth below ca. 30 cm where the water is signifcantly cooler (ca. 25 °C). The species was found abundant at the type locality where it co-occurred with D. translucida,
which appears to have been less common (Ref. 131371).
