Etymology: Haplochromis: Greek, Haploos = single + Greek, chromis = a fish, perhaps a perch (Ref. 45335); snoeksi: This species is dedicated to Jos Snoeks, professor at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Belgium, and curator of fishes at the Royal Museum for Central Africa, who extensively worked and still works on African cichlids (Ref. 85558).
Eponymy: Joseph ‘Jos’ Snoeks is a specialist in African cichlids; a part-time professor in the Laboratory of Biodiversity and Evolutionary Genomics, Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (Belgium), and Curator of Fishes, Musée royal de l’Afrique centrale. [...] (Ref. 128868), visit book page.

Diagnosis: Haplochromis snoeksi is distinguished from all riverine haplochromines from the Congo and Quanza ichthyofaunal provinces by the following unique combination of characters: chest partially naked, without scales vs. fully scaled in H. bakongo, H. brauschi, H. callichromis, H. demeusii, H. fasciatus, H. lucullae, H. moeruensis, H. multiocellatus, H. schwetzi and H. stigmatogenys; 16 circumpeduncular scales vs. 12 in H. oligacanthus and H. polli; and an upper lateral line with 23 scales vs. 17-19 in H. luluae (Ref. 85558).
Body shape (shape guide): fusiform / normal.
Rheophilic species (Ref. 97348), found on a substrate of sand with pebbles and mud (Ref. 85558).
