Etymology: Tomiyamichthys: occurring on sand-rubble bottoms in the vicinity of coral reefssmithi: Named for Professor J.L.B. Smith, for his contribution of the first description of this genus as well as his great ichthyological achievements for the southern hemisphere (Ref. 51116).

Rückenflossenstacheln (insgesamt) : 7; Rückenflossenweichstrahlen (insgesamt) : 12; Afterflossenstacheln: 1; Afterflossenweichstrahlen: 12. Second dorsal fin with 1 spine and 12 rays; longitudinal scale rows 64-72; and body with 13 deep brown cross-bands (Ref. 51116). See also meristics of anal and pectoral fins; characterized further by mottled brown color of head and anterodorsal body; narrow white spaces between brown bars on body; caudal fin base with large dark brown spot; first dorsal fin triangular with irregular brown and white bands and prominent ocellated blackish spot near margin; second dorsal fin base with large brown spots and blue, yellow and brown submarginal bands; yellow with pale blue margin anal fin; pelvic fins dark brown to blackish; united pelvic fins, well developed frenum present; longitudinal scale series 93-96; head, nape, base of pectoral fin and prepelvic region without scales; cycloid scales covering body; greatest depth of body 6.9 in SL; lanceolate caudal fin, longer than head length (Ref. 90102).
