Etymology: Monognathus: Greek, monos = one + Greek, gnathos = jaw (Ref. 45335); herringi: Named for Peter J. Herring who was of great help to the authors by collecting and preserving Monognathus material on board the "Discovery".

背的软条 (总数) : 78; 臀鳍软条: 58. M. herringi differs from the other species of the genus by the following combination of characters: head long with elongate, pointed snout, skull length 6.4% TL, rostral fang strongly hooked with distal part in a nearly right angle to dorsal profile of skull, anal fin origin below myomere number 28, and no lateral, subdermal spots of pigmentation.
Body shape (shape guide): eel-like.
M. herringi 在组合特徵之后有别于本属的另一个种藉由: 头部长的有细长的, 尖的吻,头盖骨长度 6.4% TL, 嘴的尖牙强烈地以末梢部的部份钩住在一几乎对头盖骨的背面轮廓的直角, 在 28 号 myomere, 与颜色的没有侧面又皮下斑点之下的臀鳍起源。
