Etymology: Aspidoras: Greek, aspis, -idos = shield + Greek, dora = skin (Ref. 45335).
Eponymy: Rui Simões de Menezes (1917–2001) was a Brazilian zoologist and ichthyologist at the Universidade Federal do Ceara, Brazil where he was instrumental in founding the Institute of Marine Sciences (1961). He collected the holotype of the Aspidoras species. (Ref. 128868), visit book page.
