Etymology: Cribroheros: Name from Latin noun 'crībrum' meaning sieve (verb crībrō meaning to sift or sieve), in combination with the old cichlid genus Heros meaning hero; referring to the substratum sifting feeding strategy.

Also appeared as new in Kner & Steindachner 1864:11, Pl. 2 (fig. 1) from Colombia and Panama. Reviewed by Bussing (1998: 322), with key, diagnosis, geographical distribution, and figures.

Inhabits rocky and sandy stream usually with moderate to fast flowing water and between 20-400 meters elevation. Feeds upon aufwuchs and invertebrates as well as various aquatic insects.
