Etymology: Bodianus: Bodianus after Bodiano or Pudiano, from the Portuguese pudor, meaning modesty (Jordan & Evermann, 1896); macrourus: Name from the Greek makros for long, and feminine noun oura for tail, referring to the elongate tail depicted in a pencil drawing of this species on which the original description was based (Ref. 75973).

Ecology
Marine; reef-associated; depth range 10 - 40 m (Ref. 5374), usually 15 - 40 m (Ref. 9710). Tropical
Western Indian Ocean: restricted, Mauritius, Réunion and St. Brandon's Shoals. Records outside this area may be bilunulatus, loxozonus, or perditio (M. Westneat, pers.comm.).

Dorsal spines (total): 12 - 13; Dorsal soft rays (total): 9 - 11. Black band encircling body posteriorly oriented vertically in adults, almost as broad below lateral line as above; posterior edge of band not reaching past posterior edge of hypurals ventrally (Ref. 9823).
Body shape (shape guide): fusiform / normal.
Adults inhabit exposed seaward reefs with sand patches (Ref. 9710). Oviparous, distinct pairing during breeding (Ref. 205).
