Biologie     Fachlexikon (Englisch) (z.B. epibenthic)

Facultative air-breathing (Ref. 126274); Occurs upstream. Prefers to live in small, moderately sunny and shallow creeks with sandy to sandy-muddy bottoms. Also occurs on the edges of stagnant zones of flooded forests (dams, lakes). Populations living on darker substrates have more and larger spots. Sexual dimorphism is well marked, the pectoral fins in the male are markedly longer and thicker due to the presence of a number of spikelets (Ref. 35381).

Life cycle and mating behavior Geschlechtsreife | Fortpflanzung | Ablaichen | Eier | Fecundity | Larven

The female holds 2-4 eggs between her pelvic fins, where the male fertilizes them for about 30 seconds. Only then the female swims to a suitable spot, where she attaches the very sticky eggs. The pair repeats this process until about 100 eggs have been fertilized and attached (Ref. 1672).
