Etymology: Marcusenius: Becasue of J. Marcusen, author of "Zur Phauna des Schwarzen Meeres", 1867; ichthyologist.
Eponymy: Dr Johann Andreas Marcusen (1817–1894) was a Latvian of German descent who was a physician, ichthyologist and zoologist. [...] This is a toponym and refers to Stanley (Boyoma) Falls, DRC, which is the type locality. (Ref. 128868), visit book page.

Africa: widespread in the Congo River basin in Democratic Republic of the Congo (Ref. 42493), Republic of Congo (Ref. 44840), Central African Republic (Ref. 45441) and Angola (Ref. 11970, 120641). Also in the lake Tanganyika basin (Ref. 36899), but apparently only in lower courses of tributary rivers, including the Malagarasi (Ref. 54847), and not in the lake itself (Ref. 36901). Reports from the Sanaga (Ref. 51193) and Benue (Ref. 42497) in Cameroon questionable and unconfirmed (Ref. 81274, 81635).
