Etymology: Lycodes: Greek, lykos = wolf + Greek, suffix, oides = similar to (Ref. 45335).

Dorsal soft rays (total): 94 - 98; Anal soft rays: 80 - 84; Vertebrae: 100 - 104. Distinguished from other members of the genus by the following combination of characters: lateral line system ventromediolateral; pectoral fin rays 22-23; first dorsal fin pterygiophore associated with vertebra 3-5; preanal distance 43-46% SL; color brownish with 6-10 white bars or patches along the dorsal part of the body and dorsal fin; peritoneum black.
