Comments: Known from the Gulf of Tonkin (Ref. 9706), Quang Tri Sea, Khanh Hoa (Ref. 30915), Hon Ong and Phu Quoc Island, on soft bottom areas with sand silt and seagrass (Ref. 129070). Genetically distinct from Japanese specimens (Ref. 30915). Listed as Endangered in 1994 Vietnam Red Data Book as H. japonicus. Also Ref. 46452.

In Zostera seagrass beds; also in estuaries. Length type refers to height (= TL - head length). Ovoviviparous (Ref. 205). The male carries the eggs in a brood pouch which is found under the tail (Ref. 205). Minimum depth reported taken from Ref. 128812.
