Notropis grandis
|
Domínguez-Domínguez, Pérez-Rodríguez, Escalera-Vázquez & Doadrio, 2009 | Fr, Thr
| native | Zacapu shiner (English), Carpita de Zacapu (Spanish), Zacapu shiner (English) | | 4.56 cm SL male/unsexed | | Found only in the Zacapu Lake and its outlet in Michoacan. The introduction of the exotic carp species Cyprinus carpioand Ctenopharyngodon idella and their parasite Bothriocephalus acheilognathi Yamaguti, 1934 seems to pose a negative impact on this species. Water mass in the lake has decreased due to reduction of water inflow to the springs that feeds the lake and drying of the original marshy area for agricultural purposes. This water mass reduction had detrimental impacts on the Zacapu Lake population of Zoogoneticus quitzeoensis (Bean, 1897), severely comprising genetic diversity and increasing the extinction risk of its fish populations. This fish species should be considered in danger of extinction under the Mexican environmental law and based on the criteria of Risk Evaluation Method (Método de Evalucaión de Riesgo-MER). Also it is proposed that this should be classified as critically endangered based on IUCN criteria (Ref. 84762). | No picture yet. |

| native | Maravatío shiner (English), Carpita de Maravatío (Spanish), Maravatío shiner (English) | | 5.08 cm SL male/unsexed | | Found only in San Miguel Spring in southeast region of Maravatio town in the upper Lerma River drainage in Michoacan. Only small population was recorded in 2000 and 2002. The species was not anymore found from 2004 to 2007. The spring is under intense human pressure as a recreation and washing place. Absence of this species from the spring could be possibly due to the recent introductions of alien species Poecilia reticulata, Heterandria bimaculata and Oreochromis sp. (Ref. 84762). The species should be considered in danger of extinction based on the Risk Evaluation Method done by Sanchez et al. 2007 (Ref. 84762).

Zoogoneticus tequila
|
Webb & Miller, 1998 | Fr, Thr
| native | Tequila splitfin (English), Picote tequila (Spanish) | | 6.00 cm TL male/unsexed ;8.00 cm TL female | | Type locality, Río Teuchitlán, Río Ameca drainage, at the eastern edge of Teuchitlán, Jalisco (Ref. 36807). Apparently existing only in one locality, a small pool which is under continued threat by introduced species and habitat degradation. With its very small range of occurrence and area occupancy, the total population is thought to be less than 50 mature individuals and thus assessed in March 1, 2007 as Critically Endangered. Since 1992, collection efforts were unsuccessful that it was thought this species may be extinct in the wild, however, an extremely small population was found in 2000-2001 in a very small pond where it was reported to be composed of less than 500 individuals of all ages with less than 50 individuals are adults. It was rediscovered in a very small lake in 2003. This species is reported to being maintained in captivity by aquarists in North America and Europe and it has been recommended that breeding programmes are implemented so that it can be reintroduced into the original, larger pools it previously inhabited (Ref. 117910).
Status of threat: endangered. Criteria: 1,4,5 (http://fisc.er.usgs.gov/afs/) (Ref. 81264). | |
