Etymology: Eviota: No etymology given, suggested by Christopher Scharpt: from Latin 'eu' for 'true' and 'iota' for anything very small, in combination 'truly very small' referring to it as being the smallest vertebrate at the time it has benn described by Jenkins (thus, making the suggestion by Scharpt plausible.; hoesei: Named for Douglass F. Hoese, in recognition of his important contributions to the systematics of gobioid fishes..

Duri punggung (Keseluruhan (total)): 7; duri punggung lunak (Keseluruhan (total)): 8-9; Duri dubur 1; Sirip dubur lunak: 7 - 8; vertebrata, bertulang belakang: 26. This species is distinct from its congeners by the following characters: D VI + I, 9; A I, 8 (usually); some pectoral-fin rays are branched; cephalic sensory-pore system pattern 2; 2 diffuse to prominent dark spots at the base of pectoral fin; fifth segmented pelvic-fin ray present, usually about 1/10 length of fourth ray; and 6 subcutaneous bars/spots on lower postanal trunk (Ref. 59013).
Collected from tidepools and rock and coral reefs in lagoons and reef slopes (Ref. 59013).
