Comments: Type-locality of the holotype of Pachypanchax patriciae: 'Ampandra River ca. 2 km upstream of village of the same name' (Ref. 57724). Known from the Mananjeba, Mahavavy du Nord, Ifasy, Manehoko and Ampandra river basins in northwestern Madagascar (Ref. 57724). Habitat loss caused by deforestation of the watersheds of the Mananjeba, Mahavavy du Nord and Ifasy rivers poses threats to the survival of the northern populations (Ref. 57724). Classified as vulnerable based on the criteria established by the World Conservation Union (Ref. 57724).

Biology     Glossary (e.g. epibenthic)

Inhabits small rivers that are tannin stained, acidic, very soft and deficient of dissolved substances, with compacted clay/sand bottoms, overlain with organic detritus. Also found in large rivers with a markedly seasonal hydrological regime, substantial flood plains and water ranges from clear to turbid water, but are not tannin-stained, are less acidic, harder and carry a greater concentrations of dissolved minerals (Ref. 57724). Feeds on terrestrial and aquatic insects and preyed upon mostly by fish-eating birds and dragonfly nymphs (Ref. 57724).
