Hypostomus perdido can be diagnosed from all congeners, except H. fonchii, by having unicuspid teeth (vs. bicuspid teeth). It differs from H. fonchii by having the following characters: 26-27 dermal plates in the median series of lateral plates (vs. 28); 7-10 premaxillary teeth (vs. 18-21); 8-13 dentary teeth (vs. 18-25); more depressed head, head depth 15.8-18.1% in SL (vs. 19.1-22.0%); and median buccal papilla present (vs. absent) (Ref. 95502).
