Comments: Known only from the southern Congo River basin (Ref. 120641) in the Camaloa River (Luangue River tributary, Kasai River drainage, middle Congo River basin) (Ref. 11970). Type-locality of the holotype of Gnathonemus barbatus: 'Caluango, riv. Camaloa, afflt. riv. Luangue' (Ref. 11970). Also Ref. 3203.
