Etymology: Rubicundus: Latin for red or ruddy, referring to reddish coloration of all species. (See ETYFish);  lakeside: Named for the Lakeside Foundation of California, for supporting Mincarone’s work. (See ETYFish).

This species is distinguished from its congeners by the following characters: teeth with 3/3 multicusp pattern (vs. 3/3-4 in R. lopheliae ; 3/2 in R. rubicundus); prebranchial pores 15 (vs. 26 in R. eos, 19-21 in R. lopheliae); trunk pores 50 (vs. 75-77 in R. eos, 62 in R. rubicundus); tail pores 19 (vs. 26 in R. eos), total pores 80 (vs. 128-130 in R. eos, 100-102 in R. rubicundus) and by having two bilaterally symmetrical nasal-sinus papillae (vs. no nasal-sinus papillae in R. eos and R. lophelia) (Ref. 123790).

Size of 27.5 cm TL is that of an immature female. Collected with a galvanized metal minnow trap where the bottom was nearly flat, covered with fine grey sediment and occasional lava boulders (ca. 0.5 in diameter) in the vicinity of other large lava reefs (Ref. 55621). Minimum depth from Ref. 58018.
