Etymology: Garra: Name based on a vernacular Indian name (Hamilton, 1822:343, Ref. 1813); a fish living in mud (Ref. 128817); elongata: Named in reference to its larger size in relation to the body depth of other species belonging to the gotyla complex (Ref. 42976).

Épines dorsales (Total): 1; Rayons mous dorsaux (Total): 7; Épines anales 1; Rayons mous anaux: 5. 13 predorsal scales, 2 1/2 scale rows between lateral line and pelvic fin origin, transverse groove on snout, weakly developed proboscis, scaleless chest, dorsal and pectoral fin rays branched, and vent midway between pelvic and anal fin origins; transverse black bar on dorsal fin and longitudinal black band on middle of caudal fin (Ref. 42976).
