Inhabits shallow waters of most rocky areas. Females, non-territorial males and subadults forage in shoals of sized-matched individuals. Feeds predominantly on epilithic algae (Ref. 27668).

Mouth brooder with maternal parental care. Males defend spawning territories against conspecific and other Neochromis males. Brooding females occur among rock boulders in very shallow water.
