Etymology: longignathus: Name 'longignathus' from the Latin word 'longus' and Greek word 'gnáthos', meaning 'long' and ' jaw', in reference to the long jaw of the new species.
Eponymy: The ‘Vanneau’ was the name of the ship from which the type species, V. dollfusi, was collected. (Ref. 128868), visit book page.

Dorsal spines (total): 7; Dorsal soft rays (total): 10; Anal spines: 1; Anal soft rays: 9. This species is distinguished from its congeners by the following set of characters: head wide and depressed; mouth anterior tip above level of lower eye edge; posterior angle of jaw ending posteriorly below posterior iris; suborbital longitudinal row b anteriorly ending distant behind the vertical to the posterior edge of eye; absence of a transverse rows c above or below row b; six suborbital transverse c rows of sensory papillae; suborbital longitudinal row d divided; and anterior dorsal transverse row o distant at the dorsal midline from the equivalent row (Ref. 138099).
