Dorsal spines (total): 9; Dorsal soft rays (total): 11; Anal soft rays: 11. This species is distinguished from its congeners by the following set of characters: second dorsal fin with 11 soft rays; anal fin with 11 soft rays; lower gill rakers 7; antrorse preopercular spine minute, weakly developed; preocular spine usually single, absence of accessory spines at base; caudal fin brown basally, broadly whitish (semitranslucent) anteriorly, posterior half almost entirely brown; pelvic fin with ca. 6-8 rows of narrow, wavy black bands or dotted lines; relatively large orbit, its diameter 12.4%-12.8% SL; and relatively narrow interorbital region, its width 1.3%-1.5% SL (Ref. 137903).
