Etymology: brooksi: Name 'brooksi' in honor of American artist David Ian Brooks, for providing critical support to N.K.L. during eight ichthyological expeditions to Ecuador, Guyana, Peru, and Venezuela from 2005 to 2023.

Dorsal spines (total): 3; Dorsal soft rays (total): 8; Anal spines: 2; Anal soft rays: 6. This species is distinguished by the following set of characters: medial teeth on premaxilla 21 or 22; principal dorsal-fin rays 11; dorsal-fin first pterygiophore at a vertical anterior to 25th vertebra neural spine posterolateral process of parurohyal, about 50% of anterior ceratohyal length; opercular odontodes 25-30; autopalatine fenestra, about 75% of its area; interopercular odontodes 18-21; straight inner margin of frontal; ascending process of opercle, about 70% length of opercular patch of odontodes; dentary teeth 4-5 (Ref. 137619).
