Etymology: Etheostoma: Greek, etheo = to strain + Greek, stoma = mouth; Rafinesque said "various mouths", but Jordan and Evermann suggest the name might have been intended as "Heterostoma (Ref. 45335).

Dorsal spines (total): 10. This species is distinguished from its congeners by the following set of characters: possession of a unique allozyme allelic combination of isocitrate dehydrogenase and malate dehydrogenase; modally 13 pectoral fin rays; lateral blotches on the anterior half of the body that are taller than wide; average of 49.3 lateral line scales and modally 10 dorsal fin spines (Ref. 137538).
