Etymology: Priocharax: Greek, prio = to saw + Greek, charax, -akos = a fish without identification (Ref. 45335)conwayi: Name 'conwayi' in honor of Dr. Kevin W. Conway, a notable ichthyologist, for his contribution to the knowledge of fish taxonomy and morphology.

Radios blandos dorsales (total) : 8 - 9; Radios blandos anales: 16 - 23. This species is distinguished from its congeners by the following set of characters: claustrum present; three infraorbitals present Ios 1+2+3; premaxillary teeth 14-20, maxillary teeth 24-29, and dentary teeth 24-34; single postcleithrum; five branched pelvic-fin rays; adipose fin absent; anal-fin base 25-31 %SL; caudal peduncle 18-24 %SL (Ref. 133463).
