Etymology: Coregonus: Greek, kore = pupils of the eye + Greek, gonia = angle (Ref. 45335); brienzii: 'brienzii', i.e., named after Lake Brienz, where the whitefish species is endemic in (Ref. 123357).

It is a medium-sized whitefish with moderate pigmentation on its fins and body. The flanks above the lateral line exhibit a light to dark greenish-blue coloration, complemented by moderate to numerous small pigmented dots on the scales along the flanks and dorsum. It is deep-bodied, a stout caudal peduncle, a short head, moderately large eyes, and a moderately thick, triangular-shaped eye socket.
