Etymology: Amatitlania: Named for the type locality of the type species; 'Amatitlán' means 'a place abundant in amate' in Nahuatl, 'amate' is a kind of rustic paper made from the bark of Ficus petiolaris or Ficus indica.

Dorsal spines (total): 17 - 18; Dorsal soft rays (total): 9 - 10; Anal spines: 8 - 9; Anal soft rays: 7 - 9. This species is distinguished by having the following characters: yellowish breast, fins and throat; basal process on the largest first-arch gill-rakers; bicuspidate lower symphysial teeth with a small lingual cusp; distally two rows of interradial scales on anal fin; opercle with spots, part of a rather indistinct longitudinal stripe (Ref. 74403).
