Etymology: Pterodoras: Greek, pteron = wing, fin + Greek, doras = skin (Ref. 45335).
Eponymy: Luis A Rivas L collected fishes with the author in the Orinoco basin, but we have no further details. (Ref. 128868), visit book page.

Seven of eight paratypes (paratopotypes) designated by Fernández-Yépez (1950a:196) for Apuredoras rivasi are extant as FMNH 84066.
