Etymology: Apistogramma: Greek, apisto = uncertain + Greek, gramma = graphic signal (Ref. 45335).
Eponymy: Thorbjörn Hongslo is an aquarist and fish disease specialist associated with The National Veterinary Institute (Uppsala, Sweden). He collected the type (and that of three congeners: iniridae, macmasteri, viejita), “…entirely on his own initiative.” (Ref. 128868), visit book page.

Does not appear to practice harem spawning. The parents stay and raise the young together (Ref. 12251). Maximum length 7.0 cm TL (Ref. 12251).
