Etymology: Halidesmus: Greek, als, alis = salt + Greek, desmos = link, bond (Ref. 45335).
Eponymy: H B Thomasen collected the type in Karachi, Pakistan, while collecting live fishes for the Danmarks Akvarium (Charlottenlund); any fishes that did not survive were donated to the Zoological Museum (Copenhagen). (Ref. 128868), visit book page.

Dorsal lateral line (LL) unbranched; ventral LL consists of a single section on each side of the abdomen; LL pores opening from middle of posterior margins of LL scales. Operculum with scales. A dark spot above the pectoral fin.
