Freshwater; benthopelagic; non-migratory. Temperate; 15°C - 25°C (Ref. 12468); 30°N - 28°N
North America: Rio Grande drainage in Texas in the USA, from Devils River to mouth of Rio Conchos. Also in Rio Conchos system and endorheic Rio Sauz basin in Mexico.

Occurs in sloughs, backwaters, and margins of small to medium rivers (avoiding hot springs). 5 cm max TL (Ref. 5723). Not a seasonal killifish. Is difficult to maintain in aquarium (Ref. 27139).
