Etymology: Aulonocara: Greek, aulos = flute + Greek, kara = face, head (Ref. 45335).
Eponymy: John Stoneman was a fisheries officer in eastern Africa during the 1950s and 1960s who became Chief Fisheries Officer, Malawi (1971). He was honoured for his help in making the authors’ expedition a success. (Ref. 128868), visit book page.

Africa: Endemic to the southeast and southwest arms of Lake Malawi.

Probably found over a substrate consisting of mud or sand with a thick layer of sediment. Feeds on benthic entomostracans, particularly ostracods and chydorid cladocerans (Ref. 267).
