Etymology: Etheostoma: Greek, etheo = to strain + Greek, stoma = mouth; Rafinesque said "various mouths", but Jordan and Evermann suggest the name might have been intended as "Heterostoma (Ref. 45335); nigripinne: From the words nigrum, meaning black, and pinna, fin (referring to the black fins of breeding males) (Ref. 10294).

North America: Tennessee River drainage from Paint Rock River downstream to Duck River system (in upper and lower Duck River system) in Tennessee, Alabama and Mississippi, USA; absent in Cypress and most of Shoal Creek systems.
