Etymology: Etheostoma: Greek, etheo = to strain + Greek, stoma = mouth; Rafinesque said "various mouths", but Jordan and Evermann suggest the name might have been intended as "Heterostoma (Ref. 45335); flavum: flavum meaning golden (Ref. 10294).

Freshwater; benthopelagic. Temperate; 38°N - 35°N
North America: lower Cumberland and lower Tennessee River drainages in Kentucky and Tennessee, USA. Upstream in Cumberland River drainage to Harpeth River; upstream in Tennessee River drainage (on east side of Tennessee River only) to upper Duck River, upper Buffalo River and Indian Creek (Tennessee).

Inhabits rocky pools and adjacent riffles of headwaters, creeks and small rivers (Ref. 5723); also found in streams (Ref. 10294).
