Etymology: Haplochromis: Greek, Haploos = single + Greek, chromis = a fish, perhaps a perch (Ref. 45335);  snoeksi: This species is dedicated to Jos Snoeks, professor at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Belgium, and curator of fishes at the Royal Museum for Central Africa, who extensively worked and still works on African cichlids (Ref. 85558).

Environment: milieu / climate zone / depth range / distribution range Ecology

Freshwater; benthopelagic; pH range: 6.5 - 7.8. Tropical; 22°C - 26°C (Ref. 85558)

Short description Morphology | Morphometrics

Dorsal spines (total): 16; Dorsal soft rays (total): 9; Anal spines: 3; Anal soft rays: 6. Diagnosis: Haplochromis snoeksi is distinguished from all riverine haplochromines from the Congo and Quanza ichthyofaunal provinces by the following unique combination of characters: chest partially naked, without scales vs. fully scaled in H. bakongo, H. brauschi, H. callichromis, H. demeusii, H. fasciatus, H. lucullae, H. moeruensis, H. multiocellatus, H. schwetzi and H. stigmatogenys; 16 circumpeduncular scales vs. 12 in H. oligacanthus and H. polli; and an upper lateral line with 23 scales vs. 17-19 in H. luluae (Ref. 85558).

Biology     Glossary (e.g. epibenthic)

Rheophilic species (Ref. 97348), found on a substrate of sand with pebbles and mud (Ref. 85558).

Estimates based on models

Phylogenetic diversity index (Ref. 82804):  PD50 = 0.5000   [Uniqueness, from 0.5 = low to 2.0 = high].
Bayesian length-weight: a=0.01514 (0.00700 - 0.03275), b=2.97 (2.80 - 3.14), in cm total length, based on LWR estimates for this (Sub)family-body shape (Ref. 93245).
Trophic level (Ref. 69278):  3.3   ±0.4 se; based on size and trophs of closest relatives
Resilience (Ref. 120179):  High, minimum population doubling time less than 15 months (Preliminary K or Fecundity.).
Fishing Vulnerability (Ref. 59153):  Low vulnerability (10 of 100).
