Etymology: Polyipnus: Greek, poly = a lot of + Greek, ipnos = lanterns.
Eponymy: This is one of the strangest binomials we have ever encountered. ‘Rugger’ is slang for rugby football, and this fish is specifically named in honour of New Zealand’s national sport (some would say ‘religion’). (Ref. 128868), visit book page.
