Etymology: Nothobranchius: Greek, nothos = false + Greek, brangchia = gill (Ref. 45335); lucius: Name from Latin meaning pike, alluding to the stronger dentition (compared to its congeners), partly predatory behavior and pike-like appearance.

Morphology | Morphometrics
soft rays: 13 - 19. A species of Nothobranchius of relative large size (Ref. 83514). It is distinguished from its congeners, N. melanospilus and N. makondorum, by its somewhat longer head, longer snout in both sexes, and its more slender body in male (Ref. 83514). Snout pointed, mouth subterminal, directed slightly upward; dorsal profile slightly concave on head, concave from nape to end of dorsal fin; caudal peduncle profile straight at upper and lower side (Ref. 83514). Supra-orbital squamation variable, but most specimens with G-type; anterior part of supra-orbital squamation partly covered with epidermal tissue (Ref. 83514). Central supra-orbital neuromast system in two distinct, shallow grooves, both lined with three shallow lobes on both sides; posterior cephalic neuromast system in two curved pits (Ref. 83514).
Occurs in seasonal pools and swamps and has an annual mode of reproduction; observations on captive specimens indicate that it can be predatory to smaller fish, although this behavior is not obligatory (Ref. 83514).
