Etymology: Chromis: Greek, chromis = a fish, perhaps a perch (Ref. 45335).
Environment: milieu / climate zone / depth range / distribution range
Marine; reef-associated; non-migratory; depth range 6 - 45 m (Ref. 9710). Tropical; 35°N - 30°S
Indo-West Pacific: Three isolated populations: 1) southern Japan, Ryukyu Islands, and Taiwan; 2) Coral Sea including New Caledonia, Vanuatu, Fiji and eastern Australia; 3) Mauritius and Réunion in the western Indian Ocean. Size / Weight / Age
Maturity: Lm ?  range ? - ? cm
Max length : 14.0 cm SL male/unsexed; (Ref. 7247)
Adults inhabit outer coral or rocky reefs. They usually form large aggregations in shallow waters e.g. in lagoons; feeding well above the bottom on zooplankton (Ref. 2334). Diurnal species (Ref. 54980; 113699). Oviparous, distinct pairing during breeding (Ref. 205). Eggs are demersal and adhere to the substrate (Ref. 205). Males guard and aerate the eggs (Ref. 205).
