Asia: endemic to the Jordan River drainage basin, where it is widely distributed in lakes and most tributaries. In the coastal plain of Palestine it occurs only in the Nahr al-Muqatta (Qishon River).

Dorsal spines (total): 0; Dorsal soft rays (total): 10; Anal spines: 0; Anal soft rays: 12 - 16. Elongate and compressed body. Mouth sub terminal, its cleft reaching to below the nostrils. Pharyngeal teeth 5-5, smooth and hooked.
