Etymology: medidentatus: Name 'medidentatus' from the Latin words 'medius' and 'dentatus', meaning 'middle' and 'toothed', in reference to the moderate-size teeth in the inner row of the lower jaw of the new species.

This species is distinguished from its congeners by the following set of characters: body oval shaped; enlarged teeth in the inner row of lower jaw moderate in size; slightly longer pre-anal length, 68.5-73.5% SL; moderately large eye, 21.8-30.1% HL; scales below lateral line, 11-13 (mode 12); and total number of outer gill rakers on first gill arch 5-8 (mode 7) + 10-15 (mode 13) = 17-24 (mode 21) (Ref. 138459).
