Etymology: Glyptothorax: Greek, glyptes = carver + Greek, thorax = breast (Ref. 45335); primusplicae: Name 'primusplicae' from the Latin adjective 'primus' meaning 'first', in allusion to the first species having plicae on the ventral surfaces of paired fins in the Chindwin-Irrawaddy River drainage.

Dorsal soft rays (total): 6; Anal soft rays: 8 - 10. This species is distinguished from its congeners by the following set of characters: presence of plicae present on the ventral surface of the pectoral-fin spine and on the first pelvic-fin ray; dorsal fin located nearer to the tip of snout than to adipose fin origin; barbels slender, a nasal barbel reaching anterior margin of the orbit, maxillary barbel extending slightly beyond pectoral-fin base; anterior nuchal plate element visible as a saddle with arrow-shaped extensions when viewed dorsally; thoracic adhesive apparatus longer than broad with a conical-shaped median depression opening caudally; and three stripes on the body (Ref. 137786).
