Etymology: Gymnothorax: Greek, gymnos = naked + Greek, thorax, -akos = breast (Ref. 45335); paucivertebralis: Name from Latin ‘paucivertebralis’ meaning few vertebrae; referring to the exceptionally low number of vertebrae.

This species is distinguished by the following characters: small, moderately robust moray with body length noticeably greater than tail length; dorsal fin origin is about level with the gill opening; total vertebral count very low, 101-103. Colouration: in life pale yellow with brown reticulated network and prominent brown banding on dorsal and anal fins, more intense posteriorly (Ref. 123128).
